The 24th Annual United Nations Celebration of International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) will be held at United Nations headquarters on October 9th under the auspices of the CoNGO Non Governmental Committee on Ageing /New York with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Open to the public, this year’s program is sponsored by the governments of Argentina, El Salvador, Slovenia, South Africa and Thailand.
“Leave No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All” is the theme of this year’s event which will be held from l0 am to 1 pm . Featured as the keynote speaker will be Ms. Amina Mohammed, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning. A panel “Breaking Barriers: Sharing Successful Innovative Approaches to Ageing” will include stories from El Salvador’s grassroots organizers, showcasing technological innovations for global ageing populations and dealing with disability in ageing. Deputy Permanent Representative of Argentina, Mr. Mateo Estrémé, Chair of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing will provide an update on the status of efforts to develop a legally binding document protecting the rights of older persons. A fundraising luncheon “Ageing is an Intergenerational Journey” will follow in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room.
